The night we decorated our house for Christmas, we had two of my sisters and Melissa, Jason and Skyler over and I tested a new recipe on them. I found the recipe for Stupendous Stromboli on (where else?) Green Lite Bites and it sounded really yummy. After having Johnny run down to the store for some yeast, I successfully made my first batch of dough that actually rose! Woohoo! I pretty much took her recipe and used it as a basic outline for what to do (i.e. at what temperature to cook them, how long to cook them, etc.) and stuffed each one with fillings I had on hand. Everyone chose from the fillings to personalize them and it was a real hit! My stromboli consisted of:
- Whole wheat dough (um, duh)
- 1.5 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese
- A couple chunks of chicken
- A handful of sliced cherry tomatoes
- Mushrooms
- Fresh spinach
- Zucchini
- Garlic
- A dash of pepper
We dipped ours in spaghetti sauce and it was awesome!
After putting the stromboli together, you bake it at 425 degrees for about 15 minutes. I’m not going to include all of the instructions like I normally do just because all you really need to know is how to make the dough and then fill it with whatever you want. If you’re interested in the recipe (which you totally should be!), visit the link for the recipe above. If you’re a pizza fan (like myself) but are trying to watch your calories, this is a great alternative. Happy eating!
